ATC Accordion Fold Booklet

MATERIALS

Tim Holtz Distress Ink Pads  (2 Colours) Paper Trimmer or Scissors
29.5 cm x 21cm  (A4 Size) Piece of light coloured card with some texture – Bazzil is excellent  Assorted Rubber Stamps
Sponging Block, Latex Make-up Sponge or fingers Double Sided Tape
  Bone Folder or Scorer Ruler
  Black Ink Pad Lead Pencil
Optional: Eyelets, Setter & Hole Punch

PROCEDURE

Cut 24 x 12cm strip from one piece of the Bazzil –the extra card will be used in a later project.

From the other piece of Bazzil card, cut a 26 x 12cm strip – again keep off-cuts to use later.
Lightly mark both pieces of card at 8cm intervals along the long edges, one piece should be perfectly divided into 3 (8cm each) the other should have a 2cm extra bit – this is used to join the 2 pieces.
Score along the marks with bone scorer as indicated in the diagrams below).  A mountain fold M should point upwards towards the folder and a valley fold V points down away from the folder.

Once the folds are made, faintly mark 2cm from the bottom of each piece of card – draw a line from left to right across the card and score along this line (valley fold).  This creates a pocket along the bottom of each piece of card.  Flatten out all folds again with bone scorer.
Using Distress Ink pads ink up front and back edges of each card and each fold.  Begin with the lightest colour first and apply ink pad directly to card in a light wiping motion.  If a more subtle effect is desired, then use a sponge to apply ink to cardstock – this will also smudge the colours slightly. When panel edges are all inked, take black ink pad and carefully ink all folds on front and back of each card piece this gives a more dramatic look to the piece and clearly defines each panel.  At home spritz with water once ink is applied to blend the colours further – don’t do this today as it may weaken the card and it could rip.
Using any of the ink pads previously used for project, stamp images onto each panel – decorate as much or as little necessary.  Don’t spend too much time on the back of either the first panel or the last panel – as these will be hidden by the front and back covers.  Once done, flatten out all folds again with bone scorer.
Making sure pockets are folded up, use tape or eyelets, to secure both pockets at the end (position indicated by ? symbol on diagram above).  Then using tape only, secure other end of each pocket – bearing in mind that the pockets need to fit an ATC in each one – so use as little tape as possible.

Join the 2 pieces of card together by applying tape to the front of the extra strip and then glue this to the back edge of other card – this will create the accordion folded booklet with 6 pockets.

Using one piece of left-over card cut 2 pieces each 10 x 8cm – these will be the front and back covers.  Use Distress Inks and rubber stamps to create a decorative background on each piece.
Using double sided tape, attach covers to the front and back of accordion folded booklet.  The book may be left as-is or some kind of closure can be attached, eg: ribbon, buckle, brad and string etc.

HINTS & TIPS

Use a bone folder to crease lines – this will make it easier to open and close the book
