Bargello

MATERIALS

6 colours of card stock (I like colours that co- ordinate well, you could also go for contrasting colours, or a colour theme eg: rainbow, sea scapes, desert etc.) If you don't have a huge choice of card, use pale card and colour with pigment or dye inks before you stamp. Card to mount bargello onto when finished, can
co-ordinate with bargello colours or stark black
for dramatic effect
Adhesive paper - I use double-sided JAC paper Scrap card 12x16cm
Variety of  rubber stamps to match theme if you have one Paper cutter or cutting mat & sharp craft knife

PROCEDURE

Cut six strips of card/paper in variety of colours all 2cm wide by 16cm long.

Stamp images onto card/paper if desired.
Lay 2 cm strips onto JAC paper (after pulling off protective backing on one side).  Place them as close together as possible without overlapping.  You should not be able to see or feel any of the sticky JAC paper underneath.  Continue to stick down all 6 strips.
Using a paper cutter or ruler & sharp craft knife cut your JAC paper piece into these measurements, make sure you cut across the papers so you end up with strips that look similar to Image 1
2 x 2.5cm
2 x 2cm
2 x 1.2cm
5 x 0.6cm
Cut large piece of cardstock (measuring 12 x 16cm) that will act as a base. Begin by sticking one of the largest strips (the 2.5cm)  to the top of the card.
Image 2

Stick one of the 2cm strips next to the first. Do not stick even with the first, but offset from the left by one square Image 3. There will now be one square hanging over the right edge.  Cut this off and glue onto the opposite end to make the strip look complete - always be careful when doing this, it's here that you can MUCK UP BIG TIME!
Stick one of the 1.2cm strips next to the second strip Image 4, again offset from the left, but this time by two squares. There will now be two squares hanging over the right edge.  Cut these off and glue onto the opposite end to make the strip complete.
Stick one of the 0.6cm strips next to the third strip Image 5, again offset from the left, but this time by three squares. There will now be three squares hanging over the right edge.  Cut these off and glue onto the opposite end to make the strip complete.

Again using a 0.6cm strip, repeat step 8 - moving everything one square to the left as usual.

Again using a 0.6cm strip, repeat step 9 - moving everything one square to the left as usual. This is the sixth strip you have stuck down and should be the middle  Images 6 and 7.
  WARNING - INSTRUCTIONS CHANGE HERE!
This step uses a 0.6cm strip again, but as can be seen in Image 8 the strips are now placed from the right hand side.  Easy way to check you are doing it right is that you should begin to see your pattern emerging.  Cut off overhanging squares and glue them onto the other end - make sure these patterns line up too.  The pattern is like a hill - you've gone up one side now you must go down the other.
The last 0.6cm strip goes one square further towards the left again. This should look like Image 9.
Stick the other 1.2cm strip down, one square further towards the left Image 10, cut off overhang and adhere to opposite end.
Stick the 2cm strip down, one square further towards the left again. This should look like Image 11.
Finally, stick down the last strip (2.5cm), your bargello should now look like Image 12. The last strip should look exactly like the first.
Trim off any excess card stock Image 13 and mount bargello onto a larger piece of card stock.

HINTS & TIPS

OK, these might be simple, but they're useful :o)
If right handed begin sticking strips from the left and if left handed begin sticking strips from the right.
Line up patterns according to right hand side of bargello - don't worry about the left, it will take care of itself (I tried several times to line up both sides -  what a mess I created!
Keep cuts as straight as possible, if you make a mistake try placing an embellishment over it, mizuhiki cord to fill the gap or emboss it!
We're only human :o)

What to do with a bargello that you've mucked up :o)
