Distressed Backgrounds

MATERIALS
Spritz Bottle filled with Water Scrap paper (to cover work space)
Tim Holtz Distress Ink Pads (2 Colours) Rubber Stamps
Black Ink Pad White and light coloured Card
Latex Sponge or Sponging Block

PROCEDURE
Cut 4 pieces of card measuring 9 x 6.4cm from the off-cut piece of Bazzil (these will become the bases for the ATC’s) and another 4 pieces of card (measuring 8.6 x 6cm) from the white card, these will be the backgrounds.

Lay 2 pieces of the white card on scrap paper and wipe one colour of Distress ink across the surface of each piece until they are 50% covered with ink.   Leave on scrap paper and spray with water until quite wet and colour begins to bleed.  Keep in mind that the Distress Ink colour will lighten as it dries.

The piece can be left to dry naturally (gives the best result) and then flatten if needed with a hot iron  – no steam.  If in a hurry, dry and flatten all at once using an iron – no steam.  The results are not as well blended and may look a tad splotchy when using an iron to dry the project.  Be careful when handling ironed card as it becomes surprisingly hot to the touch!

Lay remaining piece of white card onto scrap paper and wipe one colour of Distress ink across the surface until 50% covered with ink – begin with lightest colour of Distress ink so that pads do not become muddy.
Apply second colour of Distress ink until remainder of card is coloured.
Leave on scrap paper and spray with water until quite wet and colours begin to mingle.
The pieces can be left to dry naturally allowing colours to fully blend and bleed and then flatten with a hot iron – no steam.  As before if in a hurry, dry and flatten using an iron – no steam.

Once pieces are dry, ink the edges of each piece –use one colour only and carefully wipe pad over edges – the aim is to slightly darken each edge and create a border.
To create a more interesting background, stamp images randomly over background in the same colours as used to create background.

To emphasise edges gently wipe black ink pad along each edge – this step is optional.
ATC backgrounds are now ready to be embellished and/or finished with a main image.
