Opals Image Transfer

MATERIALS

  Images photocopied or laser printed
on paper or magazine pictures
Ranger Melting pot or fry pan lined with Glad Bake (for craft use only)
Clear Opals embossing enamel Versamark Watermark ink pad (Tsukineko)
Clear Hot Glue Gun Glue Stick Warm Water
Glad Bake or other waxed food wrap Pritt Power Gel
Adirondack Alcohol inks etc. Cookie Cutter Shapes

PROCEDURE

Trim the original image so that it is a few cm’s bigger than the final size wanted for the piece.

Pour enough clear Opals into the Melting pot to create the project and wait until melted (the pot should be set to UTEE and have the lid on, to achieve this as quickly as possible).  Once melted, add clear glue stick bits if the piece needs extra strength or flexibility. Don’t stir the glue now, just pop it onto the top of the melted Opals and then leave until melted.  Once completely melted carefully fold the glue into the mixture.

When Opals are melted, pat Versamark ink over the image until generously covered.  Place image – ink side up, on Glad Bake and then pour molten Opals over image – leave until cool and hardened.   If after a particular shape, place a cookie cutter inked with Versamark ink over the image and then pour the Opals into the cookie cutter shape.  When Opals have cooled carefully remove the cookie cutter. After the Opals have cooled, place them into a container filled with warm water.  Leave the Opals piece in here for up to 5 minutes and then begin gently rubbing away the paper with fingers.  Most papers are easily removed, so don’t rub too hard or the image may be removed.   The backing paper is removed properly when there are no visible bits of white paper left on the piece.
Leave to dry. If there are still white paper fibres visible when dry, then soak piece in warm water and carefully repeat rubbing until fibres are removed.
Colour with Alcohol inks to add colour or just glue the piece over coloured paper, stamped images etc.

Glue Opals piece onto project using Pritt Power Gel!

HINTS & TIPS

This will only work with toner-based images eg: won’t  work with Inkjet printed images.

Opals are very HOT while molten – so don’t touch until hardened and cool.
For a really stunning look layer over text or another image – truly a gorgeous effect.
Collect any extra bits of opals that are trimmed from image or that have spilled.  These can be re-melted and reused with no adverse effects.
