Split Rail Fence Card

MATERIALS

3 Assorted Patterns of Specialty Paper / Card Asian Brass Charm
Square Base Card 10 x 21cm (folded in 1/2) Double Sided Tape
Scrap Card 9 x 9cm or JAC Paper Scissors or Paper Trimmer
Black Card Square 9.5 x 9.5 cm Ruler

PROCEDURE

Cut strips of paper to size indicated on diagram, each strip should measure 4.5 centimetres in length and 1.5 cm’s wide.  Cut four strips from each piece of specialty paper, there should be 12 strips – 4 of each colour/pattern.

Adhere double sided tape to the back of each strip, but do not remove adhesive backing just yet.
Take the 9 x 9cm scrap or jac paper and begin sticking strips to the paper in the positions shown in the diagram.
Begin with the lower left corner, glue the first strip down - flush with the edges.  Then using a different strip of paper glue the second strip down so that it is lined up with the first strip and the edge of the paper – keep repeating in the design shown above.  Each different symbol on the design represents a different pattern of paper.
The first 3 quadrants should all be placed starting at the outside edges (follow the numbering on the design above), the final section should start from the centre and work towards the outside.
When the design is complete, it may be embellished with something small in the centre or one of the corners.
Glue the decorated scrap panel to the piece of 9.5 x 9.5 black card square and then glue this panel to the folded Base card.

HINTS & TIPS

Careful cutting is important in this technique, as if the paper edges are crooked or raggedy then the effectiveness of the design will be diminished – so use a sharp blade and cut carefully!
There are bound to be a few errors in cutting or measuring but don’t worry, these can be hidden by overlapping the papers as they are adhered or by trimming the final design around the edges.
If the design doesn’t form and exact square, don’t worry, line all of the papers up and just trim off any excess when done.
