Watercolour Backgrounds

MATERIALS

Pale Card or Watercolour Card   Paper Towel (for cleaning brush)
A5 Card   Clear Embossing Powder
Twinkling H20s Paints   Paint Brush or Waterbrush – broad tip

PROCEDURE

  Background No 1: Watercolour Wash

Wet card evenly, then using a wet a broad tipped brush, apply colour to the card, cover the entire piece of card with one colour to work as the base colour.  Dip brush into H20 colour as often as necessary to achieve the desired colour depth.

Clean the paint brush and then load up with another colour of H20, just wipe a little of each subsequent colour onto the background – the colours will blend and combine as they dry.  Up to 3 colours may be used, but be careful which ones are chosen or the colour may become brown.

For a more intense colour, place a few drops of water directly into the Twinkling H2Os pot and let it sit there for a few seconds, this will activate the paint and allow a deeper application of colour – excellent for bold backgrounds.  Again, apply with a wet brush.

The trick to this technique (whether colour is applied as a wash or intensely) is a final application of water over the surface of the card.  This allows the colours to blend and helps to prevent banding (strips of colour).  Be generous with the final layer of water – your finished piece will look much better for it.   a For another look add rock salt crystals on top of the paper as it dries – watch and see what happens.

  Background No 2

Beautiful backgrounds can be created using Twinkling H2Os by using a few common household tools, place a few drops of water into the pot and leave to activate and then try dipping in a paint brush or toothbrush and splattering the paint onto a sheet of wet card – gives beautiful firework like patterns.

For something different try painting the card with Twinkling H2Os as in Background No 1 and then splatter with a complimentary colour – WOW!   Paint water over the top of both colours to blend or leave as is, for gorgeous shimmery spots.

  Background No 3

Try stamping and embossing an image in clear embossing powder (heat to emboss) and then painting over with Twinkling H2Os (as described in Background No 1) for a batik look.   Pat with a tissue while wet to mute all colours – looks amazing!

HINTS & TIPS

Bazzil card is not suitable for use with this technique as it is too absorbent.
